Clean and well stocked store. Friendly service.
You can't always find what you are looking for here, but if you do, it is usually at a much better price than anywhere else.
My recommendation: Start by looking at Smart & Final before you try any of the other warehouse or grocery stores.
With the $$ you save you can buy me lunch!

Friday Nights on Main are a real family affair . . . at least up until 8 or 8:30 when the little kids & puppy dogs are taken home. All the restaurants serve food and drinks at tables up & down the closed street. There's a band on each end, which are far enough apart that they don't interfere with each other. Just good music and dancing, if you wish. If you don't dance, be an observer . . . . . but you will find your feet tapping and the desire to get up and join in will take over. For the kids there's a face painter who is better than any I've seen anywhere. Prices are moderate, but when you see your little angel turn into a brightly colored character with a huge smile, it will be worth it. There are a couple of booths of non-profits: Emergency Preparedness Team, Landmarks Society selling tickets to a play, Police Department, etc. The entire event is put on by the local Chamber of Commerce who limit the number of local non-profit organizations that can be in attendence - after all, the focus of the CoC is business. But if you can overlook a few misguided rules, this is a great community event that helps pull us all together in this small community . . . at least once a week.

How many of you out there stepped outside and saw the RED MOON RISING just before 9PM this tonight?
Street address? Somewhere East of Heaven.
I can't remember ever seeing a blood red moon before.
Ever. Ever. Ever.
Tonight was a first time for me.
I am no longer an innocent.
I am in awe of our world and its sky.
I have seen a Blood Red Moon Rising. . . . !
A full moon, albeit a strange one.
As it rose higher in the night sky it took on this strange pinkish-yellow glow. . . . . .gradually changing to the yellow/gold we all know. Research tells me this isn't the first time a red moon has shown down on us. Over the centuries there have been many astronomical fantasies proclaiming its many meanings.
I don't know about fantasies . . . . or what really causes it to occur . . . .but it was glorious!
Blood Red Moon Rising!
I hope to see you again some day!
(Oh, yes, I did have a couple glasses of wine earlier this evening . . . but I saw it . . . I swear!)

Marin County Fair 2008
Categories: Performing Arts, Local Flavor, Music Venues
It isn't big!
It isn't spectacular!
It is just a good little county fair to bring your friends and family to celebrate the 4th of July weekend.
The 2008 fair is the GREENEST COUNTY FAIR ON EARTH!
The music and performances are always good and they are included in the price of the gate ticket.
Gate tickets for adults are only $14 this year.
Can't beat that deal.
All carnival rides are included too.
The only thing you will have to pay for is food. Good old county fair and carnival food! Makes my mouth water . . . . Corn dogs and ice cream and carmel apples and cotton candy and fresh lemonade and corn on the cob and barbeque and so much more . . . I try to only eat this wonderful junk food once a year . . . and it is at the Marin County Fair!
I can hardly wait for July 2nd to come around this year!
See you there!

When I was young and foolish I drank nothing but WILD TURKEY ON THE ROCKS!
Oh, wait! I still do!
Well, to be perfectly fair, I have branched out. On occasion I can be found with a good gin & tonic or an amaretto sour sometimes hits the spot. And now that I think about it, a simple glass of almond champagne can start off an afternoon delight perfectly!
But for curling up on a cold winter afternoon in front of a fireplace with a good book, nothing beats a great glass of Wild Turkey 101 on a couple of rocks!
If you have the slightest interest . . . which I do . . . in how things are made, then you need to make a stop on one of your cross-country driving trips in Lawrenceburg, KY at the Wild Turkey Distillery. Get Jimmy Russel, Master Distiller, to show you around. He's been working there for over 50 years. He knows his stuff!
The Distillery gives free tours. Check out their website at www.wildturkeybou..., or call them for their regular tour hours.
Or attend the 2nd Annual Whiskey Fest in San Francisco in October, 2008. www.maltadvocate....
Or compare bourbons on a bourbon database at www.straightbourb...
Why should you trust me . . . . simply because I am a member of the Rare Breed Society . . . a group of folks who have a deep passion and interest in bourbon making and tasting. (And on rare occasions drinking!)
. . . . only water, grains, yeast. To add color to bourbon is illegal.
Take the tour . . . . . learn all about distilling the very best Kentucky Bourbon . . . WILD TURKEY!
Or kick-back . . . have a WILD TURKEY GODFATHER: 1/2 Wild Turkey, 1/2 Amaretto, crushed ice & a wedge of lime . . . . . SMOOTH!
Why not?
Simply because it was one of the many places in the last week in Eastern Iowa that was "engulfed" - completely under water. Not a foot or two and a little silt; but as with many places, 8-10' of rain / river / flood waters.
My heart goes out to the good folks in Iowa City.
Will this very beautiful little college town every be the same?
I hope so.
It is one of a kind.

Just Mondo's. Have you ever been to a restaurant where the food is great, but you find something that turns out to be your favorite food in the entire world? Mondo's has mine. Fresh Spinach Ravioli! It's a ravioli stuffed with Ricotta & fresh spinach floating in a light lemon-dill cream sauce with chopped tomatoes & jumbo gulf shrimp ! Once I found this dish I couldn't / wouldn't ever try anything else . . . ever, ever, ever! Even though my friends told me how good some of the other dishes were, it didn't matter. I was blinded by love! This place is No 1 in Hawkeye country!

The Buckeye Roadhouse
Categories: Steakhouses, American (Traditional)
Well, I've been fantasizing about the BUCKEYE ROADHOUSE for a long time now, but never have had an opportunity to go inside.
I used to park across the street in the Manzanita Park & Ride when I worked in San Fran. Every night when I'd get off that bus and try to remember where I had parked my car at 7am, I would see all the pretty people going into the Buckeye for dinner and drinks. I wanted it to be me, but didn't want to go alone.
Well, this week just the right opportunity presented itself.
So now . . . .
One Strawberry Mojito . . . .
One Onion Rings with Mustard Seed Ketchup . . . . and
One Portobello Mushroom Lasagne with Butternut Squash,
Fontina & Smoked Tomatoe Sauce later . . . . . . . .
I can attest that the wait was well worth it!
Plus, I guarantee I will never ever wait that long again!
My heart's desire . . . . can be found with a Michelin Man . . . .
and it is totally and completely . . . . . . .
S O L D O U T ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Completely, completely, completely sold out . . . . .all 3,750 stone seats will have picnics & pillows & blankies & bums sitting in them watching the last performance for 2008.
Next year the performance is "Man of La Mancha."
Don't miss it . . . it should be even better than this year!

So, my plan last year, after volunteering for all 6 performances of "HAIR!", was to just buy myself a ticket and hike up to the Mountain Play this year with a blanket, a cheese/fruit/dark chocolate picnic, a couple bottles of wine, a good looking guy or two and just relax and enjoy this year's perfomance of "THE WIZARD OF OZ!"
Well, the best laid plans of mice and men . . . . and a woman who has problems saying "NO" . . . . once again found me committed to a couple months of hard labor. I knowingly committe

At that time Mill Valley was a VERY DRY town. East Blithedale, outside the dry zone, was lined with bars called "blind piggeries." McGunnis Tavern (?), now known as Scout Hall, was just one of these very unsavory places of business.
After the Saloon closed, the building saw duty as a house, a stable and finally a laundry. Around 1920 it was purchased, set-up as a non-profit corporation and became Scout Hall, Inc. Although not affiliated with the "Scouts," the non-profit organization designated the building for the benefit of local youth programs.
In 1929 this grand old building saw double duty as a shelter for Mill Valley residents who were displaced by the great fire that nearly destroyed the entire little village of Mill Valley.
Today the Grand Old Lady has served her community in many ways and is now in dire need of renovation - once again she needs a face lift. There is a capital campaign afoot in Mill Valley to raise the $$ needed to bring this lovely lady back to her former beauty.
If you remember the saloon (if you do you are dang old)
If you lived in it when it was a house (still dang old)
If you stabled you horse here (probably dead by now)
If your clothes were laundered here (probably have new ones by now)
If you found shelter here with your family during the fire (lucky you)
Then dig down in those jeans and help this lady spruce up.
And, if you, your kids or grandkids have been lucky enough to have this building for Scout or other youth events, then you need to dig even deeper down in those pockets and come up with some cold hard cash.
Full circle folks.
She's always been there for You.
Be there for Her now.
